Skating on Our Lake

Well, I have been wanting to write about how cool it is that you can skate on our lake in the winter, but I didn't want to give mom another thing to worry about. But I think she found out, so now I have to convince her of how safe it really is. It's hard to keep secrets for very long in a big family, you can't keep straight who's supposed to know what, and who's not supposed to know something. Eventually, everyone finds out from someone. If you have a big family, you understand what I'm talking about.

This Saturday was action packed for us. After church Adam, myself, David, Sarah and Walter left Leah with Adam's mom and went out to our lake to skate. Our neighbors around the bend have a huge section of the lake cleared off for skating. They have chairs, skates, a snow blower, and all kinds of stuff out there. I guess they aren't planning for the ice to melt any time soon because they leave everything out there over night. We were having a good time on the lake until Walter got hurt. He kept chasing after the hockey puck and got caught under a skate. We had to walk him home, when we got there, we realized the cut was pretty deep. Adam's mom and I took him to the animal ER for a few stitches. I left Walter there with his grandma because we had company coming over. When I got back home, Leah's great grandma had left, so we didn't have a baby sitter anymore so we took Leah with us back to the ice. She slept quietly in her car seat wrapped up in a ton of blankets and coats. She was an angel, no one even knew she was out there because she was covered up and so quite. Don't worry mom, the lake was at least 10 inches thick. The neighbors cut a hole in the ice to check it. I couldn't get my hand deep enough without getting my jacket wet. The Farmers Almanac says you can drive a truck on ice that thick.

When we came back inside, it was sundown, so we played a little rock band and then Walter and his Grandma came home, Walter was so drunk he couldn't keep his back legs from crossing and giving out from underneath him. It was very sad but he was happy to see us. We had already made plans to go snowboarding with some friends, even though we had had plenty of fun for the day. Walter's Grandma stayed and watched Leah and Walter until we got home. We stayed at the ski slopes until midnight before heading home. We had so much fun on the ice, we played a game of hockey, 4 girls against 3 guys and the girls won, believe it or not! There were a few wipe outs, Adam took several spills, managing to run into other people, taking them down too. But no one got hurt too seriously, even Walter is doing good this morning now that he's sobered up.

Sounds like you had a very busy day with lots to do. The idea of skating on a frozen lake sounds okay, I would be worried of a weak area. Your mom and I have a lot in common, we both worry about our children.
I saw you posted on my blog, unfortunately you did so before I got to finish. Right in the middle of working on it, Teena came over. We headed to Target bright and early this morning. She moved back to Manteca, from Escalon, she needed some silverware. She and Mike are getting a divorce. She has her own place now, with the kids, of course.
Anyway, you can check my blog now, I finished posting the pics.

Wow. I'm exhausted just reading that. Sounds fun though.

Leah's little dress is adorable too.

I agree about Leah's outfit. So cute.

Poor Walter! I bet he was groggy but so glad to be back home.

I grew up skating on frozen ponds and lakes in CT and have many happy memories. The location of your house is a wonderland both in the summer and winter pictures. I'm envious.

Anthony would have never been that good. You better tell Sarah she is very lucky.
Skating on the ice sounds pretty fun, poor Walter though, hopefully he didn't get any blood on your new carpet.

That looks way to dangerous. I think you should maybe wear a life jacket just in case you go across a thin piece of ice and fall in. That's so sad about Walter. Poor boy.

I'm glad you got the pictures up! Now I know what you meant when they had to shovel the snow off the ice.
I don't know if I'm going to buy iceskates, but I may go out there this weekend and check it out!

How is Walter doing?

Walter's doing good. He doesn't like his bandage, he manages to kick it off. When he was running really fast down the hall at work his bandage came flying off. I hate to put it back on because I think it makes the stitches poke into his skin. He has to keep taking antibiotics through the week twice a day, we give it to him with peanut butter, so he's happy about that.

When I had to have a bandage on my first Dachshund, I wrapped an ace around it and then put a baby cotton bobby sox over it and he was so good about keeping it on. When I had to do the same with this Dachshund, she had it off within 5 minutes. She is so clever and I call her Houdini.

Glad that Walter is coming along. I bet he gets lots of TLC and sympathy at work.
